Based on past experiences, this is going to be a very enjoyable day, with a lovely one hour or so boat ride out to the Islands from Ventura Harbor, where we may see a variety of marine life, such as dolphins, seals, flying fish, etc. We will disembark at Scorpion Bay Anchorage on Santa Cruz Island.

You will have a choice of activities:

• A moderate 5 mile round trip hike to Potato Harbor (some flat, plus short areas of steeper) with spectacular coastal views, led by a CBB Hiking Club leader.
• A short 2 mile moderate hike to Cavern Point with magnificent views usually lead by a naturalist (confirm this with Island Packers when you reserve your boat spot).
• Staying by the beach (it’s pebbly but swimmable), relaxing.
• Renting kayaks

If you think you may want to kayak, please read this information

Currently we have no plans for our own group (non guided) kayaking, but if enough people are interested, Dean has said he could help organize and possibly lead kayaking, as he is experienced at this.

If you are seriously interested in kayaking please email Patricia@PatriciaSchwartz.com AFTER Sept 26 to let her know.  Dean will get back to you. It will cost extra and you will reserve via the kayak concessions.

CBB Hiking Club—“Plan B” Hike Ellwood Bluffs
(In unlikely case boat can’t go due to rough seas)
Sunday Oct 18 at 8:30am

Your Guides: Patricia Schwartz, Dean Janoff

Trail Head & Path We will begin our walk in Isla Vista, at the Western (farthest away from UCSB) end of Del Playa. Del Playa ends and the dirt pathway begins and heads out towards Devereux. We will continue either on the beach or above on the bluff depending how much passage exists, based on tide. We will continue in a Westerly direction along the beach and bluffs, passing Sands surf beach, and the entrance to the revived Slough, and continuing past the Ellwood Pier up to Haskell’s beach and the Bacara. This path takes along an incredible and mostly complete habitat of our central/southern California coastline (where little still exists today).   This is a one-way hike and we will have a car at the Haskell’s parking lot to shuttle folks back to Isla Vista, Del Playa and cars.

What to bring: Lunch, snacks, water, good beach walkers that can handle tar or water

Directions: To Isla Vista, exit the 101 freeway at Los Carneros and head West towards UCSB, past Hollister Ave., and ending at El Collegio. Turn right onto El Collegio, and continue until you to come to the last road into IV, which is a left on Camino Corto. Continue on Camino Corto to where it runs into Del Playa, turn right onto DP and continue to the end, and turn right to park all along the last cross street, Camino Majorca. Park and you will see us gathering at the Western tip where Del Playa and Camino Majorca intersect. We will meet at 8:30am and depart at 8:45am. We will return at about 1:00pm or earlier.

Hike Difficulty and What to Bring: this hike is approx. 2 1/2 miles long, and level along the coast or bluffs. Bring walking shoes, barefoot or sandals for the beach, sunscreen & hat, water, binos for great birding, a lunch or a hearty snack.

CBB’s Hiking Program is open to everyone and is primarily exploring the trails and walkways in the Santa Barbara foothills, Santa Ynez Mountains, and local beaches. Most hikes are moderate in altitude gain and difficulty, requiring adequate health and physical ability.

**You will be asked to sign a waiver at the beginning of each hike declaring that you: 1) understand the demands physically for the present hike; and 2) that you declare yourself healthy and able to “complete” the designated hiking trail. Hikers are to assume they will complete the entire hike with the group, unless an emergency or other unanticipated event necessitates an early return. No person(s) will be left alone or unaccompanied on the hike. Therefore, the hiking leaders reserve the right to deny participation if anyone appears to unprepared, unfit, ill, or physically challenged sufficiently to pose a significant risk for harm, or an inability to complete the hike as planned. So, please use good sense in deciding the appropriateness of each hike given the above, issues so that we may be safe and together throughout. Finally, we will choose hikes that offer a range in difficulty and length so that a majority of those interested will be able to participate.

Proper clothing: includes wearing layers for wind and cold, footwear appropriate for uneven surfaces, rocks, and dirt trails (eg., tennis shoes w/ vibram soles, light hiking boots), hat, sunblock, sm. daypack w/ water – (suggested 2 liters), snack, etc. Come join us in enjoying the exercise, beautiful trails & hikes in Santa Barbara, and the opportunity to meet other CBB nature lovers.
