What are we changing or doing to each space?

    Lobby / Hallway
  • New entry doors will have "art glass," to create a more inviting and inspiring welcome
  • Lobby and corridor completely re-carpeted, painted and re-lit
  • Benches will have new cushions and there will be additional seating options
  • Sisterhood Gift Shop will have new built-in display cabinets and the free-standing cabinets that are there will be removed
  • The objects in the wood display boxes will be moved to the Small Chapel book case
  • New art on the wall   
  • Very elegant tile transition added to floor between lobby and Sanctuary/Social Hall
    Girsh-Hochman Sanctuary
  • Pews to be replaced by upholstered chairs, which can be reconfigured to enhance intimacy and sense of community in worship
  • New lighting fixtures
  • Decorative tile placed on the soffet
  • New carpet and paint
  • Wood walls refurbished
  • New divider between the sanctuary and social hall
    Social Hall
  • New carpet, paint and lighting
  • Acoustical treatment to minimize the echo chamber effect
  • Wood on stage and dance floor refinished
  • New curtains
  • New chairs
    Small Chapel
  • Transformed into Chapel/Library with beautiful wall to wall bookcase for sacred books and objects
  • Bookcase includes the new Ark and Ner Tamid (eternal light) designed by Laurie Gross Studios
  • New carpet, paint and wall treatments
  • New furniture for meetings and gatherings
    Offices
  • New carpet and some new lighting
    Overall
  • The acoustic material (cottage cheese) on the ceiling will be removed throughout all of the upper building space—including the offices
  • New more efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning system

Who has been working on this project?
Aaron Ettenberg, the Board President, appointed Judi Koper as the chair of the Temple Renewal Committee.  Other members of the committee are: Ruelene Hochman,  Jody Kaufman,  Martie Levy,  David Landecker,  Barry Mosesman, Deborah Naish, and Gail Teton-Landis.

Rabbi Cohen, Cantor Childs and Bryan Conyer have been involved in the process.

Shari Childs, chair of the Arts and Architecture Committee, Rick Heimberg, Building Trustee, Bob Temkin, At-Large Trustee and several other members of the building committee have also been involved in the process.

This group has been getting together since last summer to define our needs and work with the architect, Dawn Sophia Ziemer of Kruger, Bensen and Ziemer Architects.

Our contractor is Frank Schipper—who has done many projects in Santa Barbara, including the Hillel building at UCSB.
