Tishah B'Av, the Ninth Day of Av, is the day on which the Jewish people recalls the catastrophes which it has suffered and which have
influenced its life and character. Tonight we will gather in our Small Chapel at 7:00 p.m. and sit low on the ground in a gesture of mourning as we chant and read the Book of Lamentations (Eicha). Why attend? Why mourn when we can get on a plane and return to a gloriously rebuilt Yerushalayim whenever we want? Because the State of Israel, its neighbors, and indeed the world are not yet redeemed. We must not forget that men, women, and children still suffer within its borders and peace is not yet won. Redemption still awaits.
On a lighter note…this Friday night's Oneg Shabbat will be accompanied by the Sephardic melodies of "Flor De Canela". This local ensemble is returning to bring the magic of Shabbat Shalom to all in attendance.
On Sunday night, we will mark the Jewish holiday of love, "Tu B'Av", with a steamy program of love songs performed by me and two of my friends under the full moon on the back patio. Bring someone special (and perhaps a bottle of wine). See the yellow box on this page for more details. |
