  From the Clergy

Cantor Mark Childs We’ve just entered the Hebrew month of Elul. This entire month is a reminder that the approaching Days of Awe should be ones that we prepare ourselves to enter in advance. Walking into services on Rosh Hashanah without doing the work needed beforehand is like trying to bake a honey cake without pre-heating the oven. Let’s not let that happen.
One perfect opportunity to prepare comes with the observance of “Selichot”, a traditional evening of study, song, meditation and prayer on the Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah. We will gather Saturday night, August 31st, at 8:00 pm. Rabbi Stone will begin the evening with a High Holy Day preparation class, engaging all levels of Jewish knowledge. Following the learning session will be a service of song and meditation led by myself and my good friend Yochanan Sebastian Winston. Yochanan is a master flutist and woodwind player who weaves Jewish folk song, klezmer, and original composition into his improvisational playing. His music and his “neshama” will elevate our souls to a higher level of introspection and contrition that will literally turn our hearts to the Holy Days and our Torah covers to the pure white of the season.
