Rabbi Stone

“Who is wise? He who learns from everyone,” (Pirkei Avot 4:1). In just one year I have had the privilege of working with approximately 20 B’nai Mitzvah students. While most students enter my office and assume that I am there to teach them; but I believe that I end up learning more from them, than they learn from me! All of the hardest questions I have been asked this year have come from these thirteen year old students who want to know: If someone leads a good life, why do they suffer? What does it mean that God blesses and curses the Israelites? How are we supposed to love our neighbor if we don’t love ourselves first? And the list goes on and on…

But even more than asking good questions, all of our students are also committing to doing good deeds through their b'nai mitzvah projects. One such project, presented by Kyla Murphy, encourages us to partake in 93 good deeds before the New Year.
A central theme of the High Holy Days is that repentance, prayer and charity can lessen God’s severity. With this in mind, I hope you will join Kyla’s cause and post one of your spontaneous acts of compassion on her Facebook page.

I am certain that this communal, online activity may inspire an incredible wave of kindness just in time for the holidays. Sometimes it takes our students to remind us that we do not need to solve every problem in the world in order to make a meaningful impact on someone’s life. Thank you to all my b'nai mitzvah students who have taught me more than you will ever know!

He will participate in several CBB programs throughout the month, including Israel Connections on Tuesdays, Sept 10th and 17th.

Please see details in Looking Ahead and the web page with a bio about Yoni, as well as his schedule.  Check back for updates.  Thank you very much to Ellen Raede for her masterful coordination of this visit, an anonymous donor for their generous sponsorship, and the Goldberg family for hosting Yoni. A family in our Movement needs your support
Ethan Kadish is a 13-year-old boy in great need of the Reform Jewish community’s help. On June 29, 2013, the afternoon peace of Shabbat at URJ Goldman Union Camp Institute (GUCI) in Zionsville, IN, was shattered by a lightning strike that left three campers unresponsive on the athletic field. Thanks to the skill, courage, and quick thinking of the GUCI staff, all three campers made it to the hospital and survived this unimaginable tragedy.  Two of the children have recovered and returned home.  Ethan is still in the hospital.  This week - the week before Ethan was to have celebrated his bar mitzvah - a fundraising campaign in his honor has been launched with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that assists those who have sustained catastrophic injury, to raise money for their injury related expenses.  Read more from URJ President Rabbi Rick Jacobs or visit Ethan’s page
