  From the Rabbi

Rabbi Cohen

We're back!  August, the summer, my sabbatical, Marian's and my long-distance trek, the short but sweet Family Campout in Skofield Park are all now rapidly receding into the past.  And Rosh HaShanah is here already.

I can't resist a Sierra Nevada metaphor:  The river of time is flowing swiftly!
The festivals (Rosh HaShanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot and the rest) are stepping stones across the river, upon which we gain our footing.  Without our festival stepping stones, the river of time might sweep us away.

Marian and I send you our warmest wishes for the New Year.
May it be for you and for those you love a year of happiness, good health, creativity, adventure and peace.  See you in shul!

- Rabbi Steve Cohen

CBB - Did you know...

The High Holy Days are a time of acknowledgement of others, appreciation for what we have, and sometimes, of transition.
Marian Grodel has been our amazing Caretaker and living here at CBB, for 25 years. We are grateful to him for all he has done for CBB.  Marian will complete his time as our Caretaker at the end of this month. On Friday night, September 20th, we will honor him and his dedication to our community during our Shabbat service, (begins at 6 pm) followed by a special Oneg in our Sukkah.

We are creating a Memory Book for Marian and we invite you to honor him with your personal message. Please send an email to reception@cbbsb.org with your short message and if you like, a photo, to be included in this book.

Yoni Returns!
Yoni Khalatnik a recent graduate of our partner, the Leo Baeck Education Center in Haifa, Israel, is currently here as our CBB
Israeli-in-Residence, for the month of September.  We are thrilled to welcome Yoni back for this extended stay, after his brief visit to our community during the Summer of 2012. He will participate in several CBB programs throughout the month, including Israel Connections on Tuesdays, Sept 10th and 17th.

Please see details in Looking Ahead and the web page with a bio about Yoni, as well as his schedule.  Check back for updates.  Thank you very much to Ellen Raede for her masterful coordination of this visit, an anonymous donor for their generous sponsorship, and the Goldberg family for hosting Yoni. Contact Ellen with any questions.

A family in our Movement needs your support
Ethan Kadish is a 13-year-old boy in great need of the Reform Jewish community’s help. On June 29, 2013, the afternoon peace of Shabbat at URJ Goldman Union Camp Institute (GUCI) in Zionsville, IN, was shattered by a lightning strike that left three campers unresponsive on the athletic field. Thanks to the skill, courage, and quick thinking of the GUCI staff, all three campers made it to the hospital and survived this unimaginable tragedy.  Two of the children have recovered and returned home.  Ethan is still in the hospital. A fundraising campaign in his honor has been launched with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that assists those who have sustained catastrophic injury, to raise money for their injury related expenses.  Read more from URJ President Rabbi Rick Jacobs or visit Ethan’s page
