Dear CBB Families-
I’m looking forward to a major event on my calendar – the 2013 URJ Biennial, taking place on December 11-15 in San Diego. I hope you will join me and nearly 5,000 other Jewish leaders for an incredible conference.
Biennial is where Reform Jews gather to learn, pray, share ideas, dance and sing, hear from inspiring guest speakers, reunite with old friends, make new connections, and reimagine Jewish life.
I will be leading one of the Thursday evening services and I strongly encourage you to join me there.
If you have never been to a Biennial, I can assure you, it’s an experience you won’t want to miss. One of our members who attended the previous Biennial in Washington D.C. said (after getting over hearing President Obama in person), "Walking into the biennial is like walking into a bustling city where every citizen has one goal: promoting Judaism in their home communities." It's truly an exciting and enriching experience. For more information and to register, click here.
Don't Delay!
B'shira uv'shalom,
Cantor Mark Childs

Help needed at Pershing Park
There is a greater need for food at our monthly dinner for the homeless in Pershing Park. Recent budget problems at Casa Esperanza have resulted in the termination of a free lunch program. Consequently, more people are showing up for dinner and they are hungrier. CBB members serve dinner the 4th Wednesday of the month at 5:15 PM. Please contact Audrie Krause for more information. If you are not able to bring prepared food to serve with our group, non-perishables single serving food items can be dropped off any Wednesday evening.

"The Women of the Book of Esther"
Wednesday, October 23
3:00 p.m.
McCune Room, HSSB 6040 at UCSB
Prof. Michael V. Fox
Jay C. and Ruth Halls-Bascom Professor of Hebrew
University of Wisconsin, Madison.
This talk will investigate the literary portrayals of the three women in the book of Esther: Vashti (the king's deposed), Esther (the woman who succeeds her), and, briefly, Zeresh (Haman's wife).
In the predominant feminist reading, the opposite fates of Vashti and Esther fates are said to reinforce the assumptions of patriarchal dominance. They teach that women must be obedient and can get their way only through deviousness, submissiveness, and beauty.
But a reading better attuned to literary cues and relevant social standards shows that author appreciates both Vashti's sense of dignity and Esther's strength and mental agility.
Esther grows into leadership, saves her people, and provides a model for the Jew in foreign realms.
