  From the Rabbi

Today Marian and I return to Santa Barbara, having journeyed all the way to London, England for our daughter Rachel’s wedding.
The celebration lasted almost two full weeks and we are utterly exhausted and supremely elated.
In London we were surrounded by family from Boston and England and Mexico, and by friends from North Carolina, Israel and New York, and by an extraordinary new family of modern orthodox English Jews, who welcomed us as though we were long-lost relatives whose return they had been awaiting for twenty years.  We sang long and loudly; we danced wildly to the funkiest “hava nagila” I’ve ever heard; we ate way too much and walked only some of it off on the streets of London; we laughed often and we wept tears of joy.  It will be good to be home, and to share with you all our renewed vision of living, loving Judaism.

CBB - Did you know...

CBB has committed to help raise $10,000 to outfit an entire treatment room at the the new Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower of the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem.  And the gift will be matched by the Davidson Family.  The Tower is considered the most advanced medical facility in the Middle East.  We have raised $6,000 so far and need your help to reach our goal.  Join us at the All Beethoven Concert, Sunday, January 12th and the CBB Shira Concert on Sunday, February 23rd where your free-will donations will benefit this effort.

Jewish Genealogy Interest Group
Tuesday, January 21
10 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Sahyun Genealogy Library, 316 Castillo Street
Dec. Topic: “Yiddish—A Thousand Years of Jewish Life.”
Prof. Arthur Schwartz will discuss Yiddish not only as a language—its origins, evolution and dissemination—but also as a treasure chest of Jewish family and community life. Arthur Schwartz, UCSB professor emeritus of Linguistics and an ardent lover of Yiddish, teaches a weekly Yiddish class at the Jewish Federation. He says Yiddish embodies terms that describe family structure not found outside the Jewish community, as well as much folklore regarding the raising of children and the maintenance of individual health. Please join us for this illuminating and evocative presentation, followed by a Q&A session and time for individual research assisted by the experienced librarians on duty. Free and open to all. No RSVP needed.

Pop Up Film Festival 2014
Thursday, January 23, 2014
The Arlington Theatre
Temple member Daniel Bollag is producing a unique film festival featuring 7 controversial documentary films with a focus on social injustice and civil rights, all in one day. Two films are by award winning Israeli director and recent local resident, Meni Phillip, a well-know Israeli singer who moved from being an Orthodox to a secular Jew.
Sinner – winner of Venice Film Festival, tells the story of a young Jewish student caught up in a cycle of abuse (mature content).

Let there be light, presents a rare viewpoint of an Orthodox family torn apart, while telling the moving tale of a secular family’s rebirth (includes adult language).

Other films include Femme Q&A, Sharon Stone's film about women empowerment and The Suspect, two African American social scientists pose as bank robbers in an effort to understand the racial dynamics of small-town law enforcement. However, their experiment takes an unplanned, deadly turn. Tickets are $15 per movie or $50 for an all-day pass. More information click here.
